Fire Damaged Structure

Overview

Cold Storage Structure, Navi Mumbai

Problem:

  • RCC frame of cold storage was damaged after exposing to fire for longer duration
  • Excessive deflections were observed in few locations
  • NDT results indicated lower velocity in UPV test, implying poor quality of concrete
  • Core showed porosity and lower compressive strength
  • Bonding capacity of cement paste reduced when subjected to higher temperature
  • Exposure to high temperature caused micro cracking and spalling in concrete

Solution:

  • Repairing was carried out by grouting low viscosity monomers to seal the micro cracks and improving the micro structure of concrete.
  • Spalled portions were treated by polymer modified mortar
  • Additional steel supports were introduced to control the deflection
  • Instead of conventional wrap system, factory made composite profiles were used
  • Composites were fixed at site by chemical adhesive and mechanical anchors
  • Project was completed in 60 days period
  • Post Repair NDT result were satisfactory indicating improvement in velocity results

Overview

Office Building for Crompton Greaves

Problem:

  • Due to a fire first floor slab was badly affected with micro cracks all over the area.
  • Bonding strength of cement had reduced and the NDT velocity values were also on lower side
  • Some ceiling panels also showed signs of distress

Solution:

  • Cracks were grouted with low viscosity high molecular weight monomer grout
  • Spalled concrete was replaced with thixotropic mortar
  • Sagged lintels were re-casted and all areas were re-plastered
  • External portion of building was treated with a waterproof elastomeric coating
  • Internal work was completed in a time span of 30 days
